Canmore, AB to Calgary Christian School in Calgary, AB
What a beautiful ride, and a quick one too! The ride was mostly downhill with a tail or cross wind. Caleb has joined William and I in riding. After the first rest stop we got passed by George, a rider of all the Sea to Sea rides and once a semi-pro bicyclist. I tucked in behind him for a kilometre or two then dropped back with William and Caleb. But then I got Caleb on on drafting me so we could pick up the pace. After a few short minutes we caught up to George and kept ahead of him for the rest of the day!
Lunch was gratiously provided by Bow Valley Church in Cochrane. Leaving Cochrane we checked out the skatepark and I rode through it because Caleb nor William would.
Approaching Calgary revealed a very affluent side of town. We pulled jokes that we felt bad for the residents because they could afford tops for their cars, how long driveways are annoying to walk up, and how hard it must be to live so far out from town.
The school we are at is a really good spot. The gear and kitchen truck are next to each other and the school gym is a few steps away. We can sleep inside and the church for Sunday is right across the parkinglot. We are blessed to have dinner, breakfast, and lunch provided by the church!
When arriving in camp I was relieved to see gear already unpacked. The kitchen truck was getting food delivered from the Gordon Food Service truck. I got to see a rider, Steven, from the 2013 ride and catch up a little bit. He now lives in Calgary and came to say hello to those on the tour.
Reuben Bestman got a delivery of baked goods from his family's bakery and he set up the church support. It's a great uplifting to come into set up camp, welcoming faces you don't know, and consumable replenishing substances. William, Caleb, and I did make it to a bar for some beer and nachos after we got set up in camp. While there we were able to tell our waiter about why we were in town and spread awareness of poverty.
Time: 4hr 28min
Trip: 119km
Avg: 26.6km/hr
Max: 61.7km/hr
