Washington State

The smell of marijuana welcomed us in the legalized state of Washington. We spent the night at a Ramada in Spokane Valley.
No pictures were taken by me today. Dad started us and I got us through the rest of the day. I've been feeling tired and simply determined to get to the west coast. We drove highway 2 rather than following the interstate. The highway wound through the mountain range along lakes and rivers. A favorable decision in skipping the interstate and seeing more natural wonders.
Through connection with Jack Ofringa, one of my previous highschool teachers, we got a recommendation to go to Deception Pass State Park, a state park on the Pacific Ocean coast . The old growth forest aspect is like rainforest, the ocean is a welcoming sight. The trees range from thin to thick, as thick as 4ft wide and waist high ferns cover the forest floor. The shoreline is mostly stoney, a joy to skip the stones on the water.
Tonight we'll be spending the night at another favorite spot, a LaQuinta Inn. We can see the snowy peaks of Mt. Baker from our hotel room window! More discovering of the Washington lifestyle is yet to come.

A day to savour. Riders are more relaxed now that your days are winding down and the ride distances are shortening even by just a few kilometres. It's strange how 20km less per day, about an hour of riding lessons per day, makes us feel like the day's are so much shorter. My group stayed ahead of me all day which was quite alright as I took it easy. The morning fog made for a cool by special morning. I rode primarily with no hands for the first 45km so I could sit up and take it easy. The parrelling of the Saumon River ensured a pleasant sight and a slight downhill over the day. In camp tonight we are at the foot of a ski hill. Sugarloaf Provincial Park sounds awesome as it has camping, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, tennis, and day use areas. Sault Ste Marie, MI to the Marina of Blind River, Ontario

A mix of a day. I slept poorly overnight as I got cold. I endured through it till I had to get up for breakfast set up. I think I was actually in a good mood and I was relaxed. All of Sea to Sea had to meet about 3km from camp at Lake Superior State University to bunch up for the border crossing. The crossing into Canada was neat over two long Bridges and the smoothest border crossing I've ever had by bike! I was asked where I was from and if I was quote, "having a good run," while he scanned my passport. After the border crossing I slowly fell behind William, Caleb, and Frank. By the time we got to the first rest stop at around 36km, I was barely holding 18km/hr. I felt drained with no motivation to bike. Northome, MN to Robert J. Ellington Middle School in Grand Rapids, MN

The state bird of Minnesota is definitely the mosquito; they were awful last night! After lathering bug spray on my face I got into my sheet sack. I could hear a buzzing of wings and looked up to see mosquitos gathering on the underside of the gear truck. Even just all the buzzing was enough to flow fear into my veins. The mosquitos buzzed around me face, bit me through the sheet sack, and I gave up. I decided to move inside and a few minutes later Caleb also moved inside. I slept well inside the school. I rested well and had plenty of breakfast: frosted flakes, the breakfast of Thursday. Announced at breakfast there was to be a ten kilometre optional time trial for us cyclists. I did participate when it came to be that part of the route but didn't push myself too hard. Something like an average of 31km/hr (19ish mph) and a time around 18-19minutes.
